At the end of the 1990s, a new suburb called Başakşehir sprang up in Istanbul, far from the city center. Originally planned as a public housing project, today it is primarily inhabited by the neoliberal Muslim middle class. With the planned construction of a new international airport and second Bosphorus channel, the area is flagged to become a new, future city center. Başakşehir is thus emblematic of the physical and social restructuring of the city. Sandra Schäfer's video installation traces the layers and contradictions of these urban transformations unfolding in the city.
A project by mazefilm in cooperation with the Academy of the Arts of the World, and Glasmoog/Academy of Media Arts Cologne.
